This novel offers a fresh take on an alien takeover, where life at first remains surprisingly close to normal, which feels realistic and unsettling. The female lead stands out—strong and capable, relying on intelligence and principles rather than weapons. Relationships unfold in a way that feels earned while diving into the natural consequences of war, showing the good and bad on both sides. Clean and well-written, it avoids cheap thrills, making for a compelling, thoughtful, and engaging read.

I don’t usually read science fiction, but the mix of political intrigue and rebellion in The Red Days caught my attention and held it. Add to that a smart but flawed heroine and a sympathetic alien conqueror and I found myself reading late into the night. Even if science fiction isn’t your go-to genre, give this book a try!

Having never really read sci-fi novels before, I went into this reading with an open mind and no idea what to expect. What I found was a thrilling novel that takes readers on a journey that is out of this world. What set "The Red Days" apart for me was the complexity of the storyline, and all of the characters, especially Callista, whose internal struggle between peace and war adds depth to the narrative. Katherine does a fantastic job of exploring themes of loyalty, courage, and the consequences of impossible choices in a world torn apart by conflict. I highly recommend this book for sci-fi fans, or for people who like me who are just getting an initial taste of this genre!

The Red Days

Will Aliens Rule Us?

Earth has fallen. In a world ruled by aliens, young Callista’s ordinary life is shattered when she is summoned to New York by Admiral Negev Xor-nalden. Callista’s instincts scream danger, and she narrowly escapes, joining the underground resistance, though untrained for high-level conflicts and war.

As she participates in the Renegades’ daring plans to reclaim Earth, she is haunted by Admiral Xor-nalden’s proposition for peaceful coexistence. Torn between the Admiral’s surprising offer and discovering the Renegades’ ulterior motive and their increasingly ruthless tactics, her loyalties are tested to breaking.

As alliances shift and tensions strain, a hidden threat looms, poised to obliterate both sides. With humanity’s fate and her own survival at stake, Callista must contend with hatreds and lies to forge a path to peace. Can she unite the fractured factions before it’s too late?

The Red Days is a gripping tale of courage, conflict, and impossible choices. If you were captivated by The Green and the Grey by Timothy Zahn or Way of the Pilgrim by Gordon R. Dickson, you won’t be able to put down The Red Days.
